Setting Up a .byu.edu Domain Name

As a faculty member, you have the additional privilege of being able to connect a BYU Domains website to a .byu.edu website. If you want your website to be recognized as officially affiliated with BYU, you will want to have the .byu.edu tag at the end of your domain name. This is especially helpful when you are a club advisor or department head and you need a place to host a website for a BYU-affiliated group. If you are in this situation, you need to consider several things before you decide to request the .byu.edu domain name:

1. If you choose to have a .byu.edu domain name (ex. climbingclub.byu.edu), the domain will be considered BYU's property. BYU will own the domain name instead of having the domain registered to your name.

2. You can only request a .byu.edu name that is not currently in use. So check beforehand to make sure that the domain name is available.

3. Only faculty and staff can request .byu.edu domain names, so if you are a club advisor and your students want to make a website, you have to initiate the process. Your students can't put in the request.

4. If you are requesting a .byu.edu domain name for a group, you will need to create a “non-person” Net ID and use that Net ID when signing up. Do not use your personal Net ID for this process.

If you want to request a .byu.edu domain name for your group, please send an email to domains.support@byu.edu with the following information:

  1. The name of your group
  2. Your relationship to the group (advisor, department head, etc.)
  3. What .byu.edu domain name you would like

Once you send us your request, we will set up a “non-person” Net ID in your behalf and then send you instructions on how to set up your new domain name within the BYU Domains program.

Note that BYU Domains is a cPanel driven environment with some constraints and limitations that may create issues in some cases. Before sending your request, please think about:

  • What is the size of the site including the database and files?
  • Determine how administrative access will be provisioned to BYU Domains when there is employee turnover.
  • What is an example of required components and integration needs?
  • Are there any performance needs or concerns?

Note: An email alias associated with the requested domain name will be added on behalf of the sponsoring faculty member of a club or department for purposes of managing the BYU Domains account.

If you have considered all of the above questions and want to use BYU Domains for your website, please send an email to domains.support@byu.edu.
