Learning Search Engine Optimization

Here are some tips on how to be found on the Internet and boost your site’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization):

Be an expert

Google works very hard to make sure that the first result on any search keyword is truly the best site with the best content. This means you’re going to have to write. This content should be relevant to the keywords that you want to rank (show up on Google) for. Ideally, this content should also be shareable so that others will share your expertise and link to your page.

Websites are generally ranked on something called Domain Authority, which shows how important it is to the rest of the world. When several different sites especially “big name” sites link to your, website, it will help Google recognize that people find you important enough that you should show up in search results. One way to do this is to list your business on local directories like EZlocal, yp, Another way is to get hold of those news stations and have them write an article about your teddy bear awesomeness. They’ll eat it up.

Optimizing your site is easier than it sounds, and it's a way to make your site as “readable” for Google as possible. You want it to be easy for Google to skim your site and understand exactly what you’re all about. To do this, here are some things you should check for keywords and accuracy:

  • Make sure you change your alt attributes. An alt attribute provides alternate text for an image if the image cannot be displayed.
  • Take a look at your titles. A title is the type that appears on the top “tab” of your webpage.
  • Double-check your metas. These are the blurbs that appear underneath links in a Google Search.

A great way to simplify optimization is to download the Yoast plugin for WordPress, which can help you easily. Change your titles and metas.

Site speed

This is probably the least of your worries, as Google says this is a small ranking factor (about 1%). But it can’t hurt to make your site the best it can be. First, visit your site to test its speed, and see if you need to make any changes. Make sure your pictures are only as big as they need to be, and that you don’t have too many things loading on one page.

Happy Optimizing!
