Integrating Media in WordPress

This help article deals with how to insert video, photos, documents, and sound files into your WordPress site. We hope that you will feel confident in using, different kinds of media on your website to enhance your readers' experience with your content.

Video

WordPress has made it extremely easy to embed videos directly into blog posts. here's a quick note about copyright. You cannot use copyrighted videos on your blog. However, if your site is purely for educational purposes, you may be exempt from copyright restrictions under the Fair Use clause of the US Copyright Laws. Please see http://copyright101.byu.edu/ for more information if you want to use copyrighted photos for your class blog. Luckily, there are several search tools online that can help you find non-copyrighted images. The easiest way is to use a Google Image search.

1. First, find the video or film clip that you want to use in Youtube and copy the URL.

2. Go to your WordPress dashboard and under the “Posts” tab click “Add New.”

3. Paste the Youtube URL into the post editor on your WordPress blog. The video will automatically embed into your post.

4. Include discussion questions and other text to accompany the video that your students will respond to under the video.

5. Title your post and then click “Publish” on the right side of the screen.

Photos

Before we go too much into working with pictures in WordPress, here's a quick note about copyright. You cannot use copyrighted images on your blog. However, if your site is purely for educational purposes, you may be exempt from copyright restrictions under the Fair Use clause of the US Copyright Laws. Luckily, there are several search tools online that can help you find non-copyrighted images. The easiest way is to use a Google Image search.

1. Pull up a Google search box and click the “Images” tab in the upper right hand corner.

2. Enter your search query into the search bar and hit “Enter.”

3. When your search results come up, click on “Search Tools” on the top of the page.

4. Change the image size to “Large.” This size ensures that when you make an image larger, it will retain its image quality.

5. Also change the license filter to “Labeled for reuse.” This means that you can use the image without copyright infringement. Once you find an image that you like,

6. Once you find an image that you like, download it to your computer.

7. Go to your WordPress dashboard and under “Media” click “Add New.”

8. Drag and drop your image into the uploader or browse your files to select your image.

9. Your image will upload. If you want to edit the title and/or caption for the image, click “Edit.” Otherwise, your image is now in your Media Library and you can insert it into any page or blog post.

10. In order to insert an image into a blog post, go to your WordPress dashboard and under the “Posts” tab click “Add New.”

11. Click on the “Add Media” button.

12. Select the image you want from your Media Library, pick your desired alignment and size, and click “Insert into post.”

13. In order to change the alignment and size of the picture, click on the picture and a bar will come up with options. In order to access all of the options for formatting the picture, click on the icon of the pencil.

14. The formatting window will come up. You can change the caption, size, alignment, and link. Once you are done formatting the picture, click “Update.”

15. You will be taken back to the post editor. Once you have finished adding text to your post, click “Publish to the right of the screen” in order to publish the post.

Documents

If you want to upload documents to your WordPress site. The way in which you will upload documents to WordPress depends on how you want them to display on your site. If you just want to include a link that users can click on that will automatically download to their computers, the process is very similar to the what we just did with pictures. The advantage of using a link is it will use less storage space on your website. However, if you want the PDF or document to display on a page instead of just clicking on a link, you will need to download a plugin that enables documents to be embedded. 1. Instead of dragging an image into your Media Library, just upload the document you want to include.

2. Then, in your blog post, click “Add media” and select your document.

3. A link will appear in your post with the title of the document. Click “Publish” on the right side of the page.

4. You then can test the link to make sure that the file downloads by going to your blog post and clicking the file link.

Audio

If you would like to include sound files in blog posts, you will first need to download the media file that you want to use.

1. Once you have your sound file, go to your WordPress dashboard and under “Media” click “Add new.”

2. Drag your sound file to the media uploader.

3. In order to insert an audio file into a blog post, go to your WordPress dashboard and under the “Posts” tab click “Add New.”

4. Click on the “Add Media” button.

5. Select your audio file and click “Insert into post.”

6. An audio player will automatically be inserted into the blog post with your sound file.

7. Once you have written your accompanying text for the post, click “Publish” on the right side of the screen in order to publish the post.
