File Manager

If you are using a content managing system (CMS), such as WordPress or Durpal, you can upload and edit files for your website directly from the application. If you have elected not to use a CMS, File Manager is where you will upload and edit your files.

Watch the video tutorial or continue reading for written step-by-step instructions:

Click on the “File Manager” application on the BYU Domains Dashboard.

Select “Web Root (public_html/www)” from the menu that appears. This is where the publicly-facing website is stored. Click “Always open this directory in the future” if you don’t want this selection box to open every time. If you want to edit any hidden files, be sure to select “Show Hidden Files (dotfiles).” Then click “Go.”

File Manager will open in a new tab to show all the files, images, and videos for your website. Here, you can access your backup, plugin, post, and image files. To access your publicly view able files, such as images and posts, click on the file “public_html.”

Click +File, +Folder, or Upload to add content. By adding images or videos onto File Manager, you can access them later to add to your site.

Once you select a file, you can use the options at the top of the screen to make changes. Be careful which files you edit; changing or deleting an essential file could break your website.

You can click Code editor to edit the code of your files to customize your website. If you are using a CMS, we strongly recommend not editing the code of your files.
