Creating Your Domain

Continue reading for written step-by-step instructions:

1. Go to domains.byu.edu

2. Click the “Getting Started” button

3. Sign in with NetID and Password

4. Fill out the Interest Form and click “Submit”

5. You will receive an email once you have been granted access to BYU Domains. Open the email and click on the http://domains.byu.edu link.

6. The link will take you back to the BYU Domains homepage. Click the “Get Started” button again.

7. Enter a domain name and click “Check Availability.” If it is available, you will be able to register it. Keep in mind you won’t be able to change the name later. If your domain name is not available, you can always try a different ending on your domain name, such as .net, or you can try changing the domain name slightly (for example, add your middle initial to your name, or put the word “the” in front of what you originally typed for a business, etc.).

Alternatively, if you wish to import a domain from another hosting service, the documentation is found here.

Domain Endings

Note: The different endings on the domain are called “generic top-level domains.” Basically, in the early days of the internet, it was suggested that .com domains would be for businesses, .net domains for networking institutions, .org for non-profits, and .edu for educational institutions. However, the internet got so big that keeping names in this format was impossible, so it doesn't matter what domain you have. The most common domains nowadays are .com, .net, and .org. Additionally BYU can only register .com, .net, .info, and .org domain names. We can also register .edu domains for faculty or clubs see Setting Up a .byu.edu Domain Name

8. When you have chosen an available domain name, you will be brought to the “Review and Checkout” page. Click “Register Now” to register the domain, or “Start Over” if you changed your mind.

9. You will be brought to the dashboard once the domain is registered. You will notice the alert at the top of the page saying you still need to verify the account. Check your email that you registered to find the verification email. If you can’t find the email, check your spam box or click “Resend Verification Email”.
